Generally you could use either, but "study" has more of a sense of a deliberate effort to read text books, do exercises and so forth. "learn" can more passive. So you'd probably say "I am studying English at university", but "I am learning English by immersion on a student exchange".

"studying" means something closer to "learning about" "I'm learning english" means "I'm learning to speak english". "I'm studying english" actually means "I'm learning about english" This implies that you are learning not so much how to speak english but how english is used, the linguistics of english. A Native english speaker can be studying English.

They are very similar and you could honestly say both "I am studying THE English" and "I am learning THE English language" (you must include the word "the"). However one slight difference I'll mention using examples. Sometimes "learn" is used to describe when a person is gaining knowledge for the first time while "study" is used when a person is trying to maintain that knowledge. Example: "I am learning the capital cities of the United States" can imply that I currently do not know all the capitals, but am gaining that knowledge. However "I am studying the capital cities of the United States" can imply that I already know the capitals, but I am making sure I do not forget them. Hope that helps, Alex

Others have already provided good descriptions of the differences between "studying" and "learning." But for me, there's another important distinction. Studying is a process by which a person hopes to learn. Learning is absorbing and understanding new information. But you can study without learning, and you can learn without studying.

Hey, Study and learn have very similar meanings. Study means to learn about. I am studying English=I am learning English. I'm learning about planets=I'm studying the planets. If you are in situations where you can practice, I suggest you try using them both, but my short answer is study=learn about when referring to count nouns such as planets, and learning when referring to a non-count noun such as English, or Geography.
