I'm not sure how general a word you're looking for, Marco, but 'platter' and 'serving platter' are quite limited. Platters are large flat plates which you use only to serve food - for example, you might put sandwiches or pastries on a platter at a party. You don't cook or bake using a platter - platters don't go in the oven. And I think that 'tray' is the wrong word, too. A tray (una bandeja) is completely flat, and is only used only for carrying food. You don't normally put food directly on a tray. With respect to Jason and John, I still maintain that 'dish' is your best translation. As I said, a dish is a bowl that simply isn't as deep. And you can take that from someone who has cooked more hot dinners, than ...well..most people have had hot dinners. Sorry, English idiom there :).
