''Any different'' / ''Any better''? What do these expressions mean? How should I use them in sentences? Can the word ''any'' be followed by any other words which might have the same construction (for example, ''any great'' or ''any good' etc...)?

Hi Luiz, You can use these expressions in declarative or interrogative sentences, depending on how they are used. Declarative sentences: I don't think the situation is getting ANY BETTER. I don't see these two cases as being ANY DIFFERENT. In both sentences, "any different" and "any better" are both used to express doubt or uncertainty about something. In the first sentence, the situation does not seem to be improving; in the second sentence, the two cases seem to have more in common than differences. Interrogative sentences: Is the situation getting ANY BETTER? Do you have ANY DIFFERENT opinion? Here, the two expressions are used to elicit an answer from someone. In the first question, the use of "any" implies that the person asking is keeping his or her fingers crossed on any improvement, no matter how little there may be. Yes, you can also use "any" with other adjectives such as "good". Examples: (Lazing around all day is not doing you ANY GOOD. --> a negative sentence which actually means that being unproductive all day long is not good for you.) (Are there ANY GOOD movies that we can watch? --> a question. Here, the sentence structure is: ... any + adjective + noun...?) you can also use "any" with some nouns such as "harm". (I don't think he meant ANY HARM. --> a negative sentence to assure you the someone did not harbour any ill intention.) We do not usually use "any better" or "any different" in positive declarative sentences. Examples: I think the situation is getting ANY BETTER. (Wrong - sounds odd) I think the situation is getting better. (Correct) He asked if I felt ANY BETTER. (Correct. Although this is a positive declarative sentence, it is an embedded question: the question is embedded within a main clause.) I hope this helps you.

Yes, you are pretty much asking if something was different in "any way". Is this any different? You can also use it with a ton of other words, such as "good". for example: was your corporate dinner any good last night?
