When is it appropriate to call someone “sister” in hindi? I see in a lot of the movies, that people call others “sister” “brother” “uncle” , ect. Does this require some familiarity or is it a form of respect even if you don’t know the person well? And is “didi” hindi for older sister? Sorry, just starting out. I dont know if the movie i saw yesterday was 100% hindi or not... 🧐 ❓❓❓ Thanks in advance for the help!

I would call 'Didi' to any woman ('Bhaiya' to any man) older than me (not in the workplace, not in school)... Maybe on the bus, in a vegetable market. I would call 'Bahan' or 'Bahan Ji' to a woman who I think is of my age. (again not in the workplace or in school). And of course, I wouldn't call a girl 'Bahan Ji', if I like (love) her. Thanks for asking Kristy, 'Bahan Ji'!!
