They are talking about how people interact with one another, and how people should be interacting with each other more than they are. It also is saying that our impression of Oprah is based on what the media tells us to think, not on how she is personally. The Hawthorne effect is a theory that people act the way they feel the person wants them to act during an experiment. Meaning it isn't how they normally act.
