Indian traditional Art form: Alpona Traditionally, alpona is supposed to be made using a water-based paste made from uncooked rice kernel of unprocessed sun-dried paddy called 'aatop chaal' diluted to the consistency of thick milk. In modern times, it has been strongly influenced by the colorful rangoli. Hence people use paint and paintbrushes. I also make Alpona using white and red paint. I feel the red color in contrast to the white color brings out the beauty of the design. I don't use any other color as I still want it to look like authentic Alpona. Bengalis also draw the feet of Goddess Lakshmi as they believe that Goddess Lakshmi will enter the house through that Alpona (1st pic). Sometimes people draw the Alpona from the entrance to the prayer room with the feet of the Goddess following the alpona, as shown in the 3rd picture. It shows how the Goddess will enter the prayer room.
