Sam

Sam is ideal for obtaining a British accent (RP). His postgraduate education in phonetics and phonology makes a difference. He explains how you should locate the tongue, jaw etc. to produce the required sound and is ready to demonstrate MRIs of natives pronouncing it. When I couldn’t grasp how to do a so-called happy-tensing, he taught me spectrograms and formants to let numbers speak for themselves. It helped a lot. Sam speaks multiple languages. It is fascinating to discuss their differences with him and view my native language from a non-native perspective.

Today we went over the grammar point 訳じゃない. As usual, Sam is great at breaking down language concepts and getting me to think outside of my existing ways of thinking.

The lesson was ambiguous. It seems that Sam has a strong and deep expertise in English and is capable of explaining many concepts. However, in my experience, his teaching professionalism sometimes comes with an air of arrogance and condescension. He can offer a lot of useful insights, provided you are comfortable with such behavior.
