Then I quit a 10-year career in law to become a language teacher, and I haven’t regretted it for a second. At 29, I learned my first foreign language, but fear of embarrassing myself kept me from practicing conversation for five years. By 30, I made sure never to repeat that mistake: I spoke two languages and was learning two more. At 36, I started lifting, put together my own diet, and lost 22 pounds. Calisthenics, climbing, Muay Thai, BJJ, Chinese pole, parkour. At 37, I deadlifted more than twice my body weight. Becoming mentally and physically strong changed my life. At 38, I packed up and moved back to my hometown: São Paulo. I missed the sushi so much. All this is to say there’s no such thing as being too old, too shy, too weird, or not cut out to learn.
