What is the correct answer? Two thirds of the crops ____(have) been damaged by the storm. Could you please tell me the answer should be "has" or"have" here and why? Thank you so much.

The answer is ‘have’ because ‘two thirds of the crop’ is plural. For example: One third of the crop has been damaged. In this sentence there is only one third (singular). Two thirds of the crop have been damaged. In this sentence there are two thirds (plural). Hope that helps😊

Both are correct, but "have" would be the more common and logical choice. The decision whether to think of "two thirds" as singular or plural is not a mathematical one. The decision depends on how YOU think of "two thirds". Do you think of it (in this instance) as a singular, or do you think of it as a plural? You can think of it sometimes one way and sometimes the other. Anabelle's answer is correct FOR HER because she thinks of "two thirds" as a plural. If you choose to view "two thirds" the same way that she does, then you also should regard "two thirds" as plural. However, that is not the only "correct" choice. Your brain has the liberty to override the common logic and think of plural things as singular, if it wants to do so. For example, you are free to say "A thousand people is too many for this room to hold at one time." Here's another example: "Jack, Mary, and Bob together is such a sight to behold". You are in charge, not mathematics.

Crops is plural form of 'crop'. So we use the verb 'they have' in this case as 'they' is the plural 'it'. The part about the thirds is irrelevant here. Two thirds of the crops have been/ one third of the crops have been.... it would still be plural (they). Even if you didn't say 'crops' in the sentence, it's still plural as there is more than one plant in the field: 'two thirds have been destroyed'. But in this case you would say: 'one third has been destroyed', and not 'one third have...' I know that's confusing!
