Slice of life is definitely a good genre to start out in! I personally started out with Sailor Moon but I was able to branch out with other animes like Jinsei, Clannad, Shirayuki and Horimiya. Also, high school animes are more easier to follow story line wise.

Naruto is one of the most famous anime shows in the US. But my personal favorite has proven to be Hunter X Hunter and Demon Slayer.
