I try to use some example I found on the internet:

This tense actually expresses an action which happened before an action even happened in the past in turn. So normally, this tense is used in constructs that have, in the regent phrase, the presence of such verb forms (PASSATO PROSSIMO included):

- imperfetto (da piccolo non dormivo se non avevo avuto prima i biscotti);

- passato remoto (lasciai il lavoro poiché mi avevano proposto un ottimo impiego);

- passato prossimo (ho studiato tanto poiché mi avevano detto del difficile esame d'ammissione);

- presente storico (pubblica il suo primo libro proprio quando aveva smesso di sperare).
