German learners know this strange letter called "s-zett" which is written like this ß. It isn't used in Switzerland, even though it can totally change the meaning of a whole sentence:<o:p></o:p>

Beginners sometimes don't know, that ß can be replaced by ss, so they either type B (capital b) or β (the Greek letter beta), if they don't have ß on their keyboard:

MaBen or Maβen.
Both versions are wrong, so please don't use them. Anyhow, until now there was no capital ß and if we wanted to type the word Maßen in capital letters we had to either type MASSEN or MAßEN. The first version could lead to confusion, the second just looked ugly.
But now the capital ß was finally invented: ẞ! Now we Germans can finally type MAẞEN instead of MAßEN... ;-) (I guess for non-Germans the letters all look the same)
If you want to type ẞ (capital ß), then go to Word and first type 1e9e and then press Alt and the letter c.

Nein, die Schweizer brauchen kein ß - weder ein kleines noch ein großes. Sie verstehen jeden beliebigen Text auch so! Wir Deutsche reiben uns da verwundert die Augen. Wie schaffen die das nur, zwischen "Maße" und "Masse", "Buße" und "Busse" zu unterscheiden? Aber wenn die das können, warum können wir das nicht? Anstatt nun in Deutschland die Gelegenheit einer Reform zu nutzen, um das ß auch endlich rauszuschmeißen und die Sprache zu vereinfachen, "erfindet" man einfach noch ein neues. Und macht die Sache dadurch noch ein bisschen komplizierter!
Aber so sind wir halt. Wir lieben unser ß, das sonst niemand anders hat. Die große Frage lautet nun: Wie konnten wir es eigentlich bis heute ohne ein großes ß aushalten? Und warum hat niemand schon viel früher gemerkt, dass da im deutschen Alphabet eine ganz große Lücke klaffte, die unbedingt geschlossen werden musste?:-)
That's interesting. We had similar issues in certain layouts of Hungarian keyboard where there was no í, which is really needed and can change the meaning of things. And the ASCII set doesn't have our ő either. It's nice to know someone cares enough to fix these things...
Now the question is: which fonts will actually support the capital ß ? I hate it when I pick a nice font for something and I can't write my name cause they forgot to include diacritics in the character set.
Mit dem großen ß gibt's jetzt also gewissermaßen auch die Version "extra scharf".:-)
Heutzutage brauchen die Schweizer das ß nicht mehr. Aber ich erinnere mich an sehr alte Būcher meiner Großmutter und da gab es dieses Zeichern.
