But ehm..ehm

Some native speakers very often say "but ehm..." instead of a quick "but" . What is the reason for that ? Is it always a pause to think or is there any other reason for that ?

I agree with the other Andi, most native English speakers will say "um".

In my own case, when I use this expression it is usually because I feel awkward or embarrassed and don't know how to answer. The pause gives me a little time to think of an answer that might get me out of the situation.

English speakers don't usually say "ehm", but rather "um". It's a filler word, used when the speaker is thinking, hesitating, unsure of what they want to say or trying to remember the word they want to use.

As for "ehm", I've heard Hebrew speakers use it like English speakers say "um". What other words like that do people use in other languages?
