A Frequently Used Chinese Character - '很' When it comes to the Chinese character '很', most people might say that its role is emphasizing an adjective, adverb, or mental verb such as '喜欢' and '感谢'. In most cases, however, the purpose of using '很' is just to make the sentence sound (more) natural unless '很' is stressed in speech. For example, there is hardly any difference between '今天很冷' and '今天冷' unless '很' is stressed. The only subtle difference is that the former sounds a bit more natural and is therefore used more frequently. Besides, '很' is necessary in some sentences. Take, for instance, the sentence '他很高'. A great number of learners of Chinese say '他高'. Actually hardly any native Chinese speakers say so. Therefore, if a native speaker heard 'tāgāo'(the pinyin of '他高'), he would not understand its meaning immediately, though he would understand at once at the sight of '他高' in written Chinese. In conclusion, I would like to suggest using '很' if you are not sure whether it is necessary in a sentence.

Most of my edits were just personal preferences, everything you said was fine! Very helpful topic. :)

It's a little more complicated than we think. Old italki's Mr. Eliot taught me about this one, once. "很" is something more, than meaning "very" in these cases.
