terms related to football match: spot kick, penalty kick, shoot-out? hey I came across these sentences in Time's weekly:- In the run-up to a World Cup, every English football fan has the same fear: please don’t let an England game go to a penalty shoot-out. That’s because the English have the worst record in shoot-outs—a series of spot kicks in front of goal that takes place when ......... Choose to kick first. The only “lottery” element of the shoot-out is the coin toss to determine which team chooses to kick first. The team kicking first is 60% more likely to win the shoot-out, in part because the conversion rates for penalties “to stay in the shoot-out” drops to 62% in major tournaments, while the rate “to win the shoot-out” rises to 92%. In other words, if a player is thinking that he’s about to become a hero, he’s more likely to be that hero. Q1: are the same: penalty shoot-out, shoot-out, spot kick? Q2: what does conversion rate mean here and to "stay" in the shoot-out? thanks

Spot kick and penalty kick are the same. Shoot out is the competition using penalty kicks (5 from each side then sudden death if necessary). Conversion rate is the number of penalties scored as a percentage. If you take 100 kicks and score 62 it is a 62% conversion rate. Stay in the shoot out means you score your penalty after the other side has scored theirs..

Penalty shoot-out and shoot-out are the same. They refer to the process that is used to determine the winner of a football match that 'must be won'. I'm not a big football fan, but I think that the process is: If a game is drawn after 'normal time' it goes to 'extra time'. If it is still drawn after extra time, it goes to a penalty shoot-out. This is a series of penalty kicks. A spot kick is _one_ of the kicks that makes up a penalty shoot-out, where the player has to kick the ball from a designated 'spot'. It can also be a 'normal' penalty kick, which is awarded after an infringement during the game. That is why it is called a penalty shoot-out, even though there is no actual penalty. If you loose (i.e. miss) too many kicks, you loose the game, so you need to keep scoring to 'stay in the shootout'. I'm not sure about 'conversion rate' There is a full explanation at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penalty_shoot-out_(association_football) - unfortunately the chinese version is considerably less thorough.
