The first one is a question to accompany a listening text. Without hearing the text it is impossible to answer!
The second is upgrade. Upgrade means a more recent or superior model. You can't use update here, because update refers to information.

The first question is confusing because you did not specify what happened when he got to the career`s centre but I tink the answer is (A) because since he went there he was surprise on the answer he got.
The Answer to the second question is also confusing in terms of upgrading and updating but what I can say is that a phone can be updated while the phones software can be upgraded so my answer to that question is (D)
