The meaning of 'as you can tell'. Guys,

I'm not sure what exactly the meaning of 'as you can tell'.

Could we say it in the situation which only can be noticed or detected rather than only be seen or watched?

Thank you!

Hi Pan! Welcome to Italki. The two similar expressions are "as you can tell" and "as you can see". Both of these signify that the person you are speaking to should be able to infer or observe something based on the context. "As you can tell from the weather forecast, tomorrow's beach trip is canceled." (in this example, if rain is forecasted then you can *infer* that outdoor activities will be canceled) "As you can see from my resume, I am qualified for the job." (in this example, I have *demonstrated* that I am fit for the position) I would say that I prefer to use "tell" in more situations with inferring or deducing something, whereas I tend to use "see" with situations where something is clear or obvious. I hope this helps, some expressions can be a little tricky to understand especially if they don't have a clear equivalent in your native language. Message me if you have any other questions :)

Hello Pan. In my opinion, "as you can tell" can be used in any situation where the evidence shows something that is obvious or apparent to the observer or listener. For example, if a well-dressed lady walks into a restaurant, you could say that she is not poor. "As you can tell from her clothes, the lady is not poor." I hope that this will assist you.
