Earth, the Earth, earth, the earth? As far as I understand 'Earth' is one of planets in solar system and a proper noun so that it doesn't need article 'the'.

But I found 'the Earth', 'the earth' and 'earth' in many sentences.

What do these words mean?

Hi Mira.

Capital letters indicate proper nouns, so 'Earth' and 'the Earth' refer to this planet, the third planet from the sun.

Sometimes people refer to the ground we walk on, or the soil which is upon it, as 'earth' or 'the earth beneath our feet' (no capital letter, so it's a noun, but not a proper noun.)
