Could you please explain to me the difference between these four words and provide an example for each?

My impression is:
1. 사이 ー between (a space or time) (like anywhere between two things or times)
2. 중간 - the middle of a space or time (like the exact middle between two things or times)
3. 가운데 - the center of a larger space (like the exact center/middle of a room)
4. 중앙 -　the middle/center (like 가운데,but less common/more formal since it's Sino origin)

Also, can 중간/중앙 be shortened to just 중 in casual use?

I think it'll be effective if you understand those in example sentences.
Sometimes, they have the similar meanings but it has slightly different uses.

사이 & 중간

ex) 학교와 도서관 사이에 우체국이 있다. (학교--?--우체국--?--도서관)
-----> You don't know how far those are apart from one another.
         학교 and 우체국 can be closer than 우체국 and 도서관, or otherwise.
ex) 학교와 도서관 중간에 우체국이 있다. (학교-우체국-도서관)
-----> They have the same distant from each.
ex) 쉬는 시간 사이에 은행에 들렀다. = 쉬는 시간 중간에 은행에 들렀다.
-----> These can refer to doing somthing in the middle of process.

ex) 우리 가족은 사이가 가깝다. (My family are close.)
ex) 우리 가족은 중간이 가깝다. XXXXX
-----> 사이 can be used for when describing how close people are.

가운데 & 중앙

ex) 길 가운데 차가 있다.=길 중앙에 차가 있다. (There is a car in the excact center of the road.)

ex) 네 명 가운데 남자는 한 명이다. (c.f. =네 명 중에 남자는 한 명이다.)
    계절 가운데 가을이 좋다. (c.f. =계절 중에 가을이 좋다.)
----> You can pick up and describe something by using 가운데, ~중에.
ex) 중앙 도서관. =a central library.
     중앙에서 지방으로 이전하다. =move away from Seoul into the provinces.
