やる to express "to give" / "to offer" Hello! While studying Japanese I came across the following sentence and respective translation: 一郎はみどりにスカーフをやった。 Ichiro wa Midori ni sukafu o yatta. (Ichiro gave a scarf to Midori.) I think the verb やる(yaru), despite all the meanings with which it is associated, is more commonly used to express the action "to do". And when I checked it with the online dictionary http://nihongo.j-talk.com/parser/search/index.php based on Jim Breen’s Kanjidic dictionary, I've confirmed that the meaning "to give" does apply to the verb やる (alerting that it is used when something is given to inferiors, animals, etc.) In any case, I'd like to know which are the most common ways to express giving or offering something to someone on a common or standard situation. So far I think that the most common verbs used are: 上げる(ageru) and 呉れる (kureru). Please help! Thank you in advance for your help! - Suzika

'yaru' has 2 ways to use. 1. to do ex. テニスをやる = do tennis ( play tennis ) 2. to give ex. 水をやる = give water The difference between 'yaru' and 'ageru' is.... ageru : (normal) give something to someone. yaru : give something to your friends, or your pet animals, or plant.

yaru means that you give something to someone whose social status is same or low to you, so ”私は先生に本をやった" is not good. ageru is a polite form of yaru or ataeru"与える". kureru usually means that someone gives something to you. For example, ”彼女は毎月手紙をくれる”.
