1) For the sake of argument.......means ......for the sake of discussion; in order to consider the possibility of something. Let us assume, for the sake of argument... Предположим, ради довода... -Assume, for the sake of argument, that Canadian hockey is superior to Russian hockey. -I concede, for the sake of argument, that we are all sinners. -For the sake of argument would you agree that humans are animals? 2) To argue for the sake of argument.....means.... to argue just to be difficult or contrary. -Why do some people argue for the sake of argument? Because they love to hear themselves talk, and they think that they are always right! -You don't even understand the issue, you are arguing just for the sake of argument.

"For the sake of the argument" means you are putting forward a theory to test how the discussion could progress. What is important is that the theory doesn't need to be true or factual at all! For example: "For the sake of the argument, let's say the moon is made of jellybeans. Now could you agree that a moon-rock would taste sweet?" Totally fantastical, but you have come to a new possibility: moon-rocks could be sweet. If the moon were made of jellybeans, of course. ;) More practically: "For the sake of the argument, lets say that I am right. Would you now think my actions were justified?"
