Hi.Actually in China there's a lot of rock bands or singers,but now it has few audience.In other words,I don't think it's a kind of mainstream music nowadays in China.The rock music has been very popular in eighties China.Cui Jian (崔健)& Zheng Jun(郑钧) are good representatives.At that time,people expressed their love,hope,or even despair through the rock music.However, time flies,so music also changes.

Tammy is right. Cui Jian (崔健) is very good, but quite reflective of the 1980's student movement, and few young chinese people seem to have heard of him. I would recommend you check out his band Hei Bao (黒豹). There is also Tang Dynasty (唐朝) but I am not a big fan. Otherwise Shanghai and Beijing seems to produce quite alot of post-rock bands. If you like The Cure, they might be your cup tea.

This is a tough question, because the answer is both yes and no. It does exist, but it's not very popular when compared to other forms. Generally speaking, most all Mandopop (Mandarin Pop music) is sad, whiny, boo-hoo ballad style music. Practically every other form of music that has mandarin lyrics is somewhat "underground". Of course that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, you just have to know how to find it. Rock by itself is popular in China, but only English or other foreign language rock.
