I am teaching Chinese children science. I have a question, according to American curriculum of science, is the dead leaf living or non living thing? Are picked flowers considered living or nonliving things? What are things that were once alive classified as? Is wood living or nonliving? Are there differences between America and Uk about the standards of living or nonliving things? I find according to the British curriculum of science, non living things are once alive or have never been alive. But in Brainpop of America, it says living things are alive or once alive. I am a little confused. Thank you very much!

Hmm. This is all very abstract and philosophical and I am not sure there are clear answers. I am an American and I would say that wood is alive while it's still part of a tree that is living, but wood is not alive if you have made a table or a pencil out of it. Or if you chop down a tree, it is no longer alive. I would say a leaf that fell off a tree is not alive anymore, just like if an insect dies, it's no longer living.
