Hello, can you give me suggestion about dealing with the “speaking”? I can write and understand but I am struggling with the speaking. Does shadowing work? Should I learn many more words or be more confident about the grammar to be able to speak? Thank you for your help.

Shadowing can be helping. Reading aloud is also good. Without knowing your current grammar ability and vocabulary, it’s hard to say if it would be helpful as a focus for your work. I might identify an Italki teacher who can give you an assessment of all three of these areas. Anything you do can help build confidence. Good luck in your learning. Ed

Hi Francesca! If you are interested, I'd love to help you with improving your English through speaking. I am looking to improve my spoken Italian, so maybe we could do a language exchange and spend some time speaking English and Italian. Let me know. I am an American native speaker with a background of teaching English as a second language. Melissa

Hello, Francescal! Unfortunately, speaking is the most difficult aspect of any language learning, because you simply cannot do it on your own. Doing a language exchange or taking conversational lessons will definitely help, but your lessons should be thoroughly thought through. If you plan on learning any new words it’s best to learn them in chunks (collocations) and not in isolation. There are lots of textbooks that will teach you English collocations - Oxford or Cambridge textbooks are my favourite. Good luck!
