You can use whatever abbreviations you like, provided that you clearly define them. This is necessary when the general public does not know the abbreviation you are using (as I believe is likely to be the case here). Also, I think I would use the word « hereafter » rather than « hereinafter » when presenting an abbreviation, but perhaps English speakers from other countries would disagree. « Hereafter », I might add, is not an everyday word at all, but it is commonly used in this context in academic, professional, and scholarly works. In other words, you might use it in the contexts where you don’t end sentences with prepositions and use « whom » instead of « who », but definitely not on Instagram or in a conversation with friends. The best label might depend on the context. What are they being compared to? Private/public, entrepreneur/established etc. Without knowing the context, the word that comes to mind is “independent” (consultant, worker, developer). There are also just categories for business size and organization, but they aren’t going to be universal. The US has certain terms based on how businesses are organized and pay taxes, for example. I wouldn’t recommend making up your own abbreviation. If you can’t find an accepted English equivalent, I would use a well-known Ukrainian abbreviation after explaining in some depth what it means. After reading several definitions of both your and our understanding of this word I would go for "a small business owner", as as imprecise and wordy it might sound it is actually a very standard expression. Since you were trying to translate your acronym than our acronym is "SBO". In your case it could be IT FOPs = IT SBOs Since we are on topic other similar acronyms in business English are: SMB (Small & mid-sized business) SBA (Small Business Administration) Also if I was in your position I would very much try to refrain from use of the word "FOP" or "fop" in English... because it is ehm.. generally not a nice word.
