Is this a mezzanine or a loft? What is the difference between a mezzanine and a loft? According to Cambridge Dictionary, this is a mezzanine but I have watched some YouTube videos to get to the bottom of the differences between a loft and a mezzanine and in the videos, people invariably referred to very identical structures as lofts. Or there's no difference to a laypeople and native speakers use them interchangeably? Thank you in advance! :-)

I agree with Matt. I've never heard anyone describe such a small living space as a mezzanine. Normally you only hear that term used to describe an in-between floor of a hotel, shopping mall, office building, etc.

A loft is in the roof. I would call it a mezzanine or maybe a balcony or possibly an upstairs area.

I would call it a loft. I associate mezzanine more with larger commercial buildings. Or, perhaps at least, giant mansions.
