Sherlock Holmes, Arsène Lupin, Hercule Poirot, Dr. Nikola

In the nineteenth century, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was succesful writing his detective fiction "Sherlock Holmes", a character that would make Baker Street 221b - an imaginary address back then - a very famous place in London (in the book stories).

Another british writer know worldwide is Agatha Christie, who created the characters Hercule Poirot and Miss Marble. I don't remember details of the story, but "Black Coffee" was one of my favorite books of hers.

In France, Maurice Leblanc created the antihero "Arsène Lupin", who is a man that mocks the nobles and benefits those who are in a situation of oppression. In the books, he's always avoiding inspector Ganimard.

In Australia, Guy Boothby created "Dr. Nikola" - unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to read any of his books. I just know he's got a black cat!

Do you like detective novels? Which of these characters do you know and do you think about them? Can you mention other examples of similar literature?

Lee Child's Jack Reacher is one such excellent example.

I love Elizabeth George's mystery novels, most of which feature Inspector Lynley (although my favorite character is Barbara Havers).

I really like Sue Grafton's "Kinsey Millhone" novels, which all have alphabetical names--"V is for Vengeance."

I have read detective novels in the past,  but I am not familiar with the current state of the detective novel genre. I like both Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes, but Miss Jane Marple was not much of my thing, not that she was any less good of a problem solver.  I remember Curtain was my favorite Agatha Christie book.  What was interesting is that Agatha Christie found Poirot "insufferable", and she felt that he was "an egocentric creep", while she was fond of Miss Marple.  Anyway I liked all three of them.
