Hi all,
How do you promote your italki profile?
And, if you're a student, what would you most like to see on a teacher's profile?
Sincerely,
A genuinely interested teacher.
Thank you to everyone.
I asked this because, as a teacher, I always like feedback and would like to constantly improve and broaden my goals.
Would I be correct in guessing that the question was in relation to teacher profiles? Because as a student, the answer is easy; I don't. I'm not here to garner new friends or contacts or business connections, I'm here to take language lessons, and on the side I help some people with English language issues when I have the time. It's therefore of no importance to me whether a thousand people know about my profile, or nobody does.
As a teacher, you can promote yourself by publishing articles, though the good ones can be time consuming.
You can answer questions in the Notebook and Answers sections, though I'm not sure how effective that is in gaining new students. I would recommend NOT adding "Hey, by the way, you can book lessons with me too" at the end of answers, because that can look a little... how can I put this... classless and tacky. Some teachers do that, and in my humble opinion it's not a good look. A good answer will speak for itself.
You can start conversations in the Discussions area, but they would need to be the right type. Intelligent, relevant and useful. For the right way to do this, look for discussions started by Richard. For the wrong way to do this, look at the occasional teacher who starts banal, pointless threads like "Do you like doing yoga?" and who posts half a dozen such threads in the space of 10 minutes.
As for what I'd like to see on a teacher's profile... I don't care about educational qualifications. Post graduate qualifications "don't impress me much" because teaching is not about how much you know, it's about how well you can impart it. I want to see what the thrust of a teacher's lesson plan is. Do they have one? I really don't care about seeing a picture, but I probably wouldn't consider a teacher who didn't have a video. Why? i couldn't care less what they look like, but how they sound is extremely important to me.
