Teacher Jan
Teachers: Why is business on italki so slow? Italki is running a $10 promotion.  Plus, they just hired staff to recruit new students.  So why are so few students signing up for lessons?

Maybe you answered my question, Umer.  Too many students like you wanting teachers to work for nothing instead of paying for it.  Some of us have to earn a living.

I would definitley not consider business slow. It all depends on your appeal to students. Have you tried updating your video recently? How often do you sign into Italki? How often are you in the forums?

I have noticed that when I updated to a new video that i got more requests. I also am very very fast to respond to messages from students. I spend some free time each week answering the questions and correcting notebooks, and I get on to check my schedule 2-3 times a day which keeps me looking active. I also have very specific class offerings some of which show my specialization. I also spend time learning multiple languages which helps me deal with people below intermediate level from several parts of the world. This all contributes in my opinion to the healthy collection of students I get every week.

Just a couple of thoughts Jan. The first is that students might not take too kindly to you titling this post as "business being slow". To some students, it might be viewed as a bit impersonal. Secondly, how are you taking responsibility for appealing to new students to take lessons with you?

Because once you dare to start writing on the discussion forum you get kicked out. It's just my guess, I don't know what percentage of students actually do write on the forum. But those who do, yes they get kicked out by italki sooner or later. Funny, you would think they care about their business.

Plenty of people, including quite a few paying members. Some of them are Aliph, Irena, NeilC, and those are just the paying members I know of and could think of immediately. I'm not concerned because I'm not taking lessons. No, let's put it the other way around. I'm not taking lessons because I'm concerned. If I'm blocked nothing happens really, as long as there is no money involved. But I don't think it's safe to take lessons here when you can get blocked any time.
