In learning a new language one has to acquire new words somehow; be that from reading and figuring new words out from context (caveat emptor, that can go wrong quite badly ;}), a dictionary on your desk, or an online tool.

The risk of using google / a dictionary is that it doesn't convey nuances in meaning, and you're quite likely to use one valid translation out of context and it sounds terribly off, because languages rarely have 1-to-1 equivalents on a word per word basis.

Hi there! My mother tongue is French. How are you doing? I might be able to help you with French. How do you think?

That's not cheating it's actually advised to learn with a dictionary.

Antonio: one word of warning regarding Linguee (I'm not suggesting it's not a valid tool on the whole, it has its merits!) ... I've seen on more than one occasion that they pick texts from people who have a very poor command of the target language as valid matches. Don't trust everything you see there.

I've been using Google Translator with Grammarly and it works. It translates from English to Portuguese very well, but these translations don't work with all languages. In my case, Grammarly avoids making basic mistakes and if the translation isn't correct, maybe it's because I'm using the wrong word or it is the lack of punctuation. You can use also the dictionary Linguee because it has examples for every word and it searches in both languages at the same time.

I consider it a tool, not cheating.
