Why anyone would ever choose to sit way up front in a class, I don't know.
What does "way" mean here?

"Way up front" - means at the far front. It is the opposite of "way back" meaning the far back.
So "way" is used as an informal adverb in this case.

It's also a shortened form of saying, "all the way," which means not partially.
