"He has had this car for five years." I saw this sentence and I wanted to know if I could also say "he has this car for five years" I didn't understand why the "had" is in the sentence.

He has had - present perfect used for something that started in the past and continues to the present. This is typical example of the present perfect which can be confusing. It sounds like a past tense - it is not. It is a present tense with a past aspect / origin. He has a car - statement of fact as to the existence and ownership of his car. He bought it 5 years ago - past completed action. He has had it for 5 years - he bought it 5 years ago...and still has it. Present perfect is SUPER important in english!

Hi there you could say " he's had this car for five years." Which is more grammatically correct and complete. Otherwise great question and good work.
