Where do Chinese parents say the hole you're digging will go?
I have been told by an iTalki member in China that her parents told her she was digging a hole to America, just as we say "digging a hole to China." How popular is this saying in China? Is there somewhere else they say you will emerge when your hole is deep enough?It is about digging a hole so deep it goes through the earth and out the other side. One of the crazy stories parents tell children.It sounds like a more complete story is needed, sorry!

This is the situation: a child is in the yard or a the beach, industriously digging as children do. The parent, commenting on the deep hole, uses exaggeration and says "you're digging a hole to China!" China is, pretty much, on the other side of the Earth from America, of course. So the parents are using "silly" humor of exaggeration. I guess it's also a cool form of praise for a child of that age. So, my Chinese friend's parents were saying the same thing in reverse to her when she was a child, that her deep hole would lead to America.

Parents in America and England often use this kind of comment, often as a warning but also as humor. Other examples might be "you'll poke your eye out with that stick" (possible, but unlikely, really just a reminder to be careful), and "you must have a hollow leg!" which means you must have more capacity for food than just your stomach, since you have eaten so much.

My friend for whom this remark was familiar in a Chinese version was from Jilin province, maybe this saying unique to there?

When i was a child, after Nixon's ice-breaking visit to China, Chinese and Americans had began trying to shake hands. but in movies and public broadcast Americans WERE still 'bad eggs'. 

One day several children of us were playing around adults and overheard some 'important imformation' that they were tattling about. They said the ground we were living on was part of the earth, and the earth was a globe, and the Americans lived on the other side of the globe, so they were upside down. And, if we dig a hole deep enough, we would be able to arrive where they lived. They were then just wondering and disscussing why americans could avoid dropping off the earth.

On getting so significant and exciting intelligence, the squad of children decided to set out immediatly  to dig a deep hole throughout the earth until the america, because we had a lot of querries to be resolved. We dug and dug and soon everyone got in sweat all over. but the hole was still not very deep. We came to  realize that there must be something wrong with the plan. 

One of us tentatively said, " it is said americans each have a gun, what if they shoot us when we get to their place?"  We have only wodden toy guns at that moment, so we decided not to go on digging for fear there would be an encounter. thus the great plan abortted.

Today we know that Americans do live on the other side of the earth but the also have their teet on the ground and they do not need to worrying about making a way out to avoid being thrown off the globe. and We know it as well that we will come to somewhere around Uruguay rather than the usa, if we dig the hole from Shanghai  and make it deep enough and straight enouth( passing through the earth core).
