"I love you" actually has TEN (10) characters. That is, unless you are told otherwise, spaces usually also count as characters. All punctuations such as periods (.), commas (,), question marks (?), exclamation marks (!) also count as characters. Everything that takes up a place equal to one character is counted (unless your instruction specifically says otherwise). "I am a student, studying at the University of Science and Technology Beijing" has a total of 76 characters, including spaces. The easiest way for you to do this is type in your Microsoft Word program and use the "word count" function.

Every letter is a character. I l o v e y o u. That is 8 characters. Usually, spaces and punctuation are not counted. When they say "1000 characters", it is a rough number. You don't have to be exact, you just have to be around 1000 letters. Your example sentence is about 65 characters.

I disagree about counting punctuation and spaces in the 1000 number. Technically, spaces and punctuation are characters, but when they ask you to write a letter of intent or write an essay and tell you how long it should be, they only count letters, not punctuation and spaces.

a charácter is every key you press in your computer so: I love you is 8 characters. one more point, you say: how many characters, not how much characters.
