'Named' means that someone has chosen that name for you. For example, you would say 'His parents named him John in memory of his late grandfather'. 'Called' is what people call you. So when you introduce yourself, you wouldn't say 'I'm named Tom' you'd say 'I'm called Tom'. Or you could say 'My name's Thomas, but everyone calls me Tom'.
