Advanced vocabulary in use Hello! Tell me please, are there books more useful and apprehensive in term of vocabulary than Michael McCarthy, Felicity O`Dell's "English vocabulary in use" 2007? Thank you!

Hello Aleksey I usually don't recommend that my students (especially advanced ones)learn their vocabulary from vocabulary books. It is much better and more fun to read lots of good stories and novels, and listen to songs and listen to lectures. That way you learn the vocabulary in context (lexical clusters)and then it is easier to learn the correct way to use the new words.

Hi Aleksey, The "English Vocabulary in Use" series seems pretty decent to me. It offers a good balance between quantity and context, both textual and visual. If you're looking for a more comprehensive course, you may want to check "Verbal Advantage" by Charles Harrington Elster (over 3000 words), but it's quite tedious and you'll have a hard time trying to memorize word after word with little if any context. I'd also suggest choosing an area of interest and studying it more thoroughly, then moving on to the next one (e.g. Business English, English for the Military, English Phrasal verbs, etc.). That being said, I'd go with Ruth's recommendation. Our memory works much better when we're having fun rather then forcing ourselves to study.

Vocabulary in Use series provide you with the e s s e n t i a l vocab for a certain level. I would definitely recommend you to study the book if you wish to build the vocabulary basis for the advanced level.
