Hi Maryam, 'Mistake' can be a noun or a verb, but 'error' is a noun. Using them as a noun you could say, 'I made a mistake' or 'I made an error'. The most common term would be 'I made a mistake'. When 'mistake' is used as a verb, it becomes 'mistook', 'mistaking' or 'mistaken' and would be used something like 'I mistook him for someone else'. If you misjudged someone or thing, you would say, 'I made an error of judgement' rather than 'I made a mistake of judgement'. Hope that helps.

They are synonyms, but error is a bit more formal sounding than mistake in everyday speech.

The previous answers are quite correct - I'll just offer a shorter summary. The clearest way of explaining the difference is that "error" implies fault. The verb "err" for example implies that you consciously made a decision that was incorrect.

Mistake and error mean something that is done incorrectly or wrong. Thus, they are synonyms. But the difference between these two words is in the context that they are used in. But the difference between these two words is in the context that they are used in. 1. Mistake is usually a choice that turns out to be wrong. Mistakes are usually accidental. You know it’s wrong. In other words, mistakes are performance based, and can be self-corrected. Mistake is less formal than error, and is usually used in daily speech. Coming to this place was a big mistake. We only wasted our time. 2. Errors are usually made due to the lack of knowledge. So, the action was wrong because it was different from the rules, model or specific code. Error is a more formal word than mistake. In sports, the violation of rules will be called an error. You cannot say, “I does my homework” – that’s an error! You have to say, “I do my homework”. I hope this makes sense. If something is unclear, please do not hesitate to ask questions :-)

As much as I know,"mistake" and error have the same meaning but they are used in different situation. Both of them mean that something is happened incorrectly. We use "mistake" when we do something wrong and we have a knowledge about that or when the result of our performance is not desireable. ex:buying this cellphone was a big mistake .it does not work properly. " Errors" are usually made due to the lack of knowledge .Something which is wrong because it is against the rules or models or codes and etc. ex: She wrote " they has a child" ; that is an error.she should write " they have a child". besides,"mistake" is less formal than "error" and mostly use in daily speaking.
