is it correct to say "suggest sb doing sth"? I don't know if it is right to say "i'd like to suggest the girl choosing the first solution". but i'm so sure that it's not right to say suggest sb to do sth. I'm not a native-speaker, so feel confused, i just hope some nice guys can tell me answers, and give me some examples to help me understand the collocation.

Hi Angela, Your sentence is a tad too wordy. You may consider saying "I would suggest that the girl chooses the first solution." We don't use the pattern "suggest + somebody + doing + action". Instead, you can use the pattern: suggest + (that) + somebody + action"

The next thing that follows "suggest" is the the idea that you suggest. The same applies to "recommend" and "explain". You can't add the listener between "suggest" and the direct object. You need to learn how each verb works.

suggest something to someone to make a suggestion of something to someone. Suggest + noun phrase (Can you suggest a good restaurant in this part of town?) Suggest + that-clause (I suggest (that) you leave here around four o’clock. The traffic gets very bad from about 4.30 onwards) Suggest + -ing form (She suggested travelling together for safety, since the area was so dangerous.) Suggest + wh-question word (Can anyone suggest how we might attract more people to the next event?) e.g The waiter suggested the roast beef to all his customers. e.g What did you suggest to the people at the other table? They look quite pleased with their meal.

Usually, it's suggest doing something, or suggest that someone do/does something, or should do something. Yeah, I know it's complicated so some good context can help. Anyway, I would suggest that you rewrite your initial sentence like this, "I'd suggest the girl stick with her first option."

關於「建議 (suggest)」的用法,可參考以下連結 http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/learnit/learnitv201.shtml i.e., to suggest that [sb] verb-action [in "should + infinitive" or in past, present or subjunctive (subj.) form] 可是在法語中,則出現兩種結構 http://www.wordreference.com/enfr/suggest 1. suggérer à [qqn] de faire [qch] 2. suggérer que + subj. 至於縮寫(abbreviation),如「sb = someone」、「sth = something」等,在文章上,一般是必須先以全寫介紹此字,再將縮寫以括弧加於旁邊後才能使用。 例:Is it correct to say "suggest someone (sb) doing someone (sth)"? 然後才在文章中啟用「sb」和「sth」。 但由於大家都應從一般詞典中理解這倆縮寫的含義,所以還算可以了。敬請繼續努力。祝安好。(抱歉有所修改)
