A person who is 'down to earth' does not spend a lot of time dreaming (imagining) about things that are not likely to happen. Instead he/she tries to do things which are achievable. Examples: 1. He is not 'down to earth' because he spends too much time dreaming of being a movie star. He should spend more time earning money to support his family. 2. He is 'down to earth' because he does not let his imagination confuse his understanding of what he can actually do.

To be practical, if you want a luxurious life, you must work out how to get it. Being down to earth, if you want a luxurious life, you must work out how to get it. . For many of us, dreaming of luxurious life is not being down to earth. . I am not sure that I read all the depth that Teresa does into this phrase. I am sure that many dishonest, unkind, criminals are very down to earth about what they must do.
