Hi Heidi, Neither of his parents was satisfied with the result. You can think of the sentence as : Neither the mother nor the father ____ satisfied with the result. Using the "rule of proximity", the noun or noun phrase closer to the blank is used to consider the subject-verb agreement: the father WAS. I hope this helps.
