In which situation do you use the phrase " bite me"? What exactly does it mean? Is it a dirty word?

Also useful in similar situations: (American) "Get bent!", "Shove it!" (British) "Get stuffed!"

bite me! •a command, similar to "Go to hell!" (i.e. "Leave me alone!" "Go away!" etc.) Note: not considered especially vulgar, but usually considered inappropriate in more formal settings. Also bite my ass.

Very American TV soap language. It is about the highest level of vulgarity the censors will allow for daytime family TV...does anyone actually use that in real life? I guess maybe just not in my circle of friends.
