I think I say the first more often - if I always say the second instead, I'd sound demanding. there are two meaning in BE verb in korean.. first one is " I'm john" --> in this case BE verb is '이다' "어디예요? where is it?" is same BE verb ... when you ask about the direction or place you can use "어디예요?" ex) where is north? (북쪽이 어디예요? (O), 북쪽이 어디 있어요?(X)) and Be verb in "I'm at home" is "있다" "어디 있어요? where is it? " these two BE verb are same... when you asking specific location(as what Hailey said).. you can use.. "어디 있어요?" ex) where is the pen i gave you? 내가 준 펜 어디있어요?(O), 내가 준 펜 어디예요?(X) but most of case we use both.. ex) where are yoU? 당신 지금 (있는 곳이) 어디예요? or 당신 지금 어디 있어요? where is the place you visit? 당신 방문한 곳이 어디예요? you expect (i'm a korean restaurant now) or 당신 방문한 곳이 어디 있어요? you expect (i'm a restaurant in middle of town)
